Midlands hit by Boxing Day white-out

[gallery] Snow covered parts of the Black Country and Staffordshire in a Boxing Day white-out with forecasters warning temperatures are set to plunge further.

The snow arrived in time to hit one of the biggest programmes in the sporting calendar and led to hazardous road conditions for motorists visiting relatives or going to the sales.

Traffic on the Black Country Route slowed to 30mph while drivers on the M6 also reduced their speeds as spray caused problems.

In Netherton, a 4x4 vehicle careered off the road and slid down an embankment in Highbridge Road at around 5.20pm. The driver escaped without injury.

Firefighters freed a motorist who was trapped in his car after a collision on snow-covered Barr Common Road, Aldridge, at 5.25pm. He was taken to hospital but his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. The driver of the other car was unhurt.

Meanwhile Hednesford Town's game against Worcester City at Kidderminster's Aggborough stadium was abandoned when the pitch became waterlogged with just 15 minutes to go. Scholars' fans, whose side were 3-0 up, were furious at the decision.

Sports fans tweeted weather pictures from grounds across the region, including the Hawthorns where Albion were playing Manchester City, and Walsall v Shrewsbury at the Banks's Stadium when the snow started falling just after 4pm.

The weather led to flooding as well, with both Trescott Ford and the Bridgnorth road out of Wolverhampton affected,

The Met Office upgraded its cold weather alert to Level 3 amber – the second highest - warning there was a 90 per cent chance of severe cold, ice or snow in parts of England between Boxing Day and New Year's Eve.

Temperatures could also drop as low as -10C (14F) in some places at the start of next week.

A spokeswoman said: "Low pressure, tracking southeastwards over central and southern England later Boxing Day and overnight into Saturday, is expected to give a period of sleet and snow across the Midlands."

Several centimetres of snow is likely even at low levels.
