The Dudley Business Investment Zone was launched at the Waterfront in Brierley Hill in a bid to fill up empty office space and create jobs.

One company, Commercial Express, has already moved to the area under the scheme, which offers a two-year break in rates. Dudley Council leader Pete Lowe today revealed seven more firms were in talks with the council over relocating to the district.

The Waterfront, built on the site of the former Round Oak steelworks, boomed in the mid-80s, but has since fallen away with firms moving off.

Councillor Lowe, who was appointed leader last month, said: "The Waterfront is Dudley's version of Brindley Place in Birmingham.

"What we have got to do is look again at how we can find a good mix between business and residential.

"The setting is exceptional, I think we would accept the thriving days of the mid 80s have gone and it has recently become a little tired which is why we are looking to turn that round.

"We have one business and potentially seven more on the way. I think there are positive days ahead."

The council is also holding a meeting at the Copthorne Hotel in Brierley Hill next month to promote the scheme.
