The family of West Bromwich Albion legend Jeff Astle say research into brain injuries prompted by their campaign will start next year.

His daughter Dawn today said the family were invited to a meeting this week where The FA revealed the next stage of project.

They were told a small panel of experts will be formed during a meeting on January to help establish the research.

It will include Dr Willie Stewart who carried out a new examination of the former player's brain.

The 59-year-old's brain disease, chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), was linked to repeatedly heading the ball throughout his career.

Dawn said: "We are pleased to have reached this stage. The panel of experts will have a meeting in January and put everything in order.

"The actual research in terms of former footballers and dementia will start then. But that will be a longitudinal study."

Baggies fans have been backing the family's cause by applauding on the ninth minute at each game this season in his honour.

Jeff's wife Laraine Astle said: "The supporters have been wonderful with the campaign."
