PICTURED: Car crashes into Wolverhampton shop window

Staff and shoppers got more than they bargained for when a car crashed through the window of a homeware store in Wolverhampton.

The incident happened at the Pendeford Park shops, Blaydon Road, shortly before 11am yesterday.

Home and Motorsave assistant manager Mark Barnett said there were three staff members in the store at the time, and when they heard a 'massive crash' thought some stock had fallen in the window.

"One of the staff said 'oh, a car has come through the window'. It's not what you expect on a Friday morning - coffee and biscuits yes, but a car coming through the window, no."

The till is right behind the window the car came through, he said, and while the till lad was a bit shook up, he was unharmed.

Checking the three elderly occupants in the car were okay, they called the ambulance and police and cordoned off the store.

Owner Dave Fowler said it was believed an elderly man had put his foot on the wrong pedal and accelerated into the shop front.

They had secured the shop and it was safe to operate, but the window and window frame have to be replaced and will be boarded up for the next fortnight.

Mr Fowler said they were still tidying up the mess, but it was business as usual and they were open to customers with plenty of stock on hand for Christmas.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson Claire Brown said one ambulance attended the crash, which had been 'quite a slow impact', and three people were assessed at the scene. None required treatment.
