Fights broke out in parts of the country as people battled to get their hands on TVs and Christmas presents at knock-down prices.

Asda at Merry Hill precinct were slashing the prices of hundreds of electrical items as shoppers looked for cut-price Christmas presents.

Some had been there since 6.30am ahead of the store's opening at 8am.

Staff initially allowed the first 10 people in the queue into a sectioned-off area of the supermarket and then operated a one-in-one-out system.

Glenda Jukes of Brierley Hill was first in the queue.

She said: "If you're saving £200 to £300 then it's worth getting up for."

Almost half of UK shoppers (47%) say they intend to buy a Black Friday deal, according to retail analysts Verdict.

Visa Europe predicts that £518 million will be spent on its cards today, making it the biggest day for e-commerce in UK history.

It estimates that online transactions will top 8.5 million today alone, up 22% on 2013.

However it also expects Black Friday to be followed by £500 million spent online on Monday, meaning the UK will shop its way to a £1.7 billion "cyber weekend" with a predicted record 31 million online transactions.
