The county council says it will make compulsory purchase orders if necessary on the land surrounding the road that will connect the A518 Newport Road with the A34 Foregate Street.

The cabinet has approved the moves to snap up the land, much of which is vacant.

Government funding for the road was secured in July and since then, detailed plans have been drawn up.

Regeneration chief Mark Winnington said the road 'will aid growth, ease congestion and support the development of much needed homes in the flourishing and expanding county town'.

A report by Councillor Winnington states the authority will 'seek to acquire the land' by 'negotiation and agreement with the assistance of the district valuer'.

It adds: "If land cannot be acquired in this way then the county council will seek to rely on its powers of compulsory purchase."
