Hannah Stewart, 26, was arrested after being caught with mobile phones, whiskey, vodka, cannabis and steroids for prisoners. They had been smuggled in at the request of her lover, Andrelle Leedham, 26, who she met while he was serving time for blackmail.

Stewart was sentenced to 12 months in jail at Derby Crown Court last Friday after giving evidence against Leedman and two other co-conspirators.

Gavin Williamson, MP for South Staffordshire, said the situation had been handled well by Featherstone, despite the great lengths prisoners go to to get illicit substances.

"It's to be welcomed that the prison service is working to make sure that drugs don't get into prison," he said.

"This woman has been exploited, but she did something illegal and a custodial sentence was the right thing to do.

"One of the biggest issues in prisons today is drugs, and it needs to be clear that this can not, should not and will not be tolerated."

Mr Williamson said that this was not a sign of wider issues within the prison system.

"Does there need to be checks? There already are. Does there need to be more? Perhaps, yes, but it's astounding the extreme lengths prisoners will go to to get drugs into the system.

"This is a constant war, and one that might never end," he concluded.
