New-look social club and 20 homes planned for Walsall

A new-look social club and more than 20 homes will be built under plans to transform a site in Pelsall.

The current Pelsall Labour Club will be replaced and adjacent land used for residential development as part of the proposals.

The scheme for Church Road has been put forward by Dunedin Homes and Development and will be considered by Walsall Council in the coming months.

A total of 24 properties will be built on the site, of which one will be a flat above the club and the 23 others will be a mix of private two, three and four bedroom homes.

A large tarmac area at the rear of the land will be used for housing along with a grass area which has not been used for more than 20 years. It is believed it may have previously been for a bowls green.

There will be a public garden close to the site while applicants also state there are a range of shops in the Norton Road and High Street area which would benefit from increased demand due to the scheme.

Demolition of the current club will enable a more modern facility to be created in its place.

The application has been put forward through David Potter, of agents Geoff Perry Associates Ltd.

It says: "The opportunity for development has arisen since club owners have indicated its imminent closure, due to facilities being unstable.

"There is also a significant amount of surplus land to the rear which is unused and of no benefit to the club.

"Proposals seek to make use of land which will soon be disused and if left unoccupied, may be prone to misuse.

"Therein lies the development opportunity to redevelop the parcel of land.

"The joint venture would see a new club facility being built which would cater for the needs of its members and also see a large portion of the land be allocated for residential development."

It is the latest housing development to be earmarked across the borough.

More than 400 homes are to be built on long-standing derelict land in Blakenall as part of a £50m Walsall Housing Group scheme.

It is part of the Goscote Lane regeneration corridor on land off Shakespeare Crescent, Keats Road and Chaucer Road. Another 200 have been lined up in Brownhills, including some on the former market square in Silver Street after getting the go-ahead from councillors earlier this year.
