Galloway looking to unseat Black Country MP

Controversial firebrand George Galloway says he wants to unseat a Black Country Labour MP who spoke out on immigration.

The former Labour MP, who now represents his own Respect party, said he was looking for a candidate to take on Ian Austin in the key marginal seat of Dudley North.

Mr Austin is defending a slender majority of 649 votes and faces a challenge from the Tories and UKIP next year.

Earlier this month Mr Austin called for a tougher stance on immigration and said that Labour had to 'apologise' for its 'mistakes' when it was in government.

On Twitter Bradford MP Mr Galloway wrote: "We @ukrespectparty are seeking a parliamentary candidate in Dudley North constituency against the rancid, rabid Ian Austin MP." He then incorrectly quoted the majority as 500.

Mr Austin and Mr Galloway have previously clashed in the House of Commons in the debate over British air strikes on Iraq to tackle Islamic State militants.

Mr Galloway said IS was controlling an area the size of Britain because of a 'quiescent' local population.

Mr Austin challenged the Bradford West MP to justify his remarks after the enslavement of women by jihadis.

Mr Austin said: "Does he understand how appalled people will be to hear him say that women buried alive, women enslaved are quiescent in their persecution by these people?"

Mr Galloway replied: "They don't like it up them. They'd rather have an imaginary debate moving around imaginary armies."

The left-wing Respect party grew out of the Stop The War Coalition which had opposed the Iraq war.
