Planning officers are recommending that proposals to build houses on the site of The King Charles pub in Cromwell Road, Bushbury, Wolverhampton, should be given the go-ahead when they go before councillors next week.

The plans, submitted by Malvern Estates, will be considered by Wolverhampton Council's planning committee on Tuesday.

Planning officer Ragbir Sahota said seven letters had been received from members of the public, four in support of the proposals, three against.

"The pub is in a dilapidated state, and there is anecdotal evidence of anti-social behaviour," he said.

"Four letters in support mention the poor condition of the pub, its replacement with quality housing, and the noise, disturbance and anti-social behaviour associated with the pub.

"Two letters object to the loss of the public house as a community facility, and one raises concerns about the road junction and the disturbance during construction."

Mr Sahota recommended that outline planning permission should be granted subject to conditions, including the developer contributing £105,621 towards improvements to Northwood Park.

Mr Sahota added that the area was predominantly residential.

He said that while the development would result in the loss of a community facility, there were two other pub, The Moreton Arms, and the Moseley Park, within a mile, with Bushbury Community Centre also nearby.

Councillor for Bushbury North Ian Angus said he would be sad to see the pub go, but believed many residents would support the scheme.

He said: "It's always sad to see a pub be demolished because they form part of our heritage and many people will have fond memories of the King Charles.

"However, times change and this proposal is likely to be welcomed by local residents."
