The incident happened on the southbound carriageway about a mile past Stafford Services at around 5.15pm tonight.

An ambulance and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene where the driver, a man in his 30s, was badly shaken and complaining of back pain.

Murray MacGregor, spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "When crews arrived they found the car at the foot of the embankment. Fortunately, the car hadn't rolled over or hit anything on the way down or at the bottom of the embankment.

"Initially, there was a concern that the patient would need to be brought up on a stretcher but he recovered sufficiently to be helped up the slope.

"After further assessment in the ambulance, he was taken to the County Hospital in Stafford as a precaution."
