James Gaskell, 28, and his wife Alexandra Gaskell, 24, from Birmingham, were found in their hotel room in the city with several empty bottles of cough syrup, strips of sleeping pills and anti-depressants.

The Foreign Office confirmed the death of two British nationals in Agra, but had no other details.

Reports said police were called by staff at the hotel near the Taj Mahal this morning when they had not heard from the pair.

Medicines were said to be strewn around the room, leading to speculation that they had died of overdoses.

Hotel staff said the Britons checked in yesterday evening. "When the couple did not respond in the morning hours on Tuesday, their whereabouts where checked. They were later discovered dead in the room," they said.

The bodies were sent for post mortem examination.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are aware of the deaths of two British nationals in Agra, India. We are providing consular assistance to the families."
