Brownhills market to come back for Christmas

A market is to return to Brownhills this Christmas in a bid to draw more shoppers into the town.

Up to 40 traders are being sought for a two-day pitch in High Street as part of festive celebrations.

It comes after the main weekly market was scrapped several years ago due to dwindling numbers.

The Christmas event will be based on the Walsall night market model – although it emerged this month that the main town centre event will not be held during regeneration work.

The market will be held in the Ravenscourt Precinct on December 13 and 14 and will sell niche goods, including crafts, jewellery, continental gifts and hot food.

Organisers are now urging local and regional traders who want to take part to contact them as soon as possible.

Nikki Rolls, from Walsall Council's district centre management team, said: "We're hoping to put on a really good event. The night market in Walsall town centre was extremely popular and we want to create a similar event here in Brownhills.

"We're seeking a high quality, niche Christmas market consisting of traders in crafts, jewellery, bespoke and novelty gifts, continental goods and

cottage industry businesses.

"If this is you, we'd love to hear from you."

The event will run from 10am until 4pm on both days and there will also be a Santa's Grotto, children's rides and other festive themed entertainment.

Regeneration chief Councillor Mohammad Nazir welcomed the news.

He said: "This should be a great event for the people and visitors to Brownhills.

"I hope local people get behind this and who knows, it could be a regular event for the town."

Stall holders will be charged a fee of £10 for non-food items and £20 to sell food.

Fees are the same for one or both days.

Traders will need to bring their own facilities such as table and chairs, marquee and lighting.

They must provide a copy of their public liability insurance and the necessary documentation if they are a food trader. Call Nikki Rolls on 07904 264920 or email RollsN@walsall.gov.uk for more information or to book a place.

It comes after it emerged earlier this month that night markets in Walsall town centre, which have attracted thousands of shoppers, have been scrapped until further notice.
