Cannock Chase Council is one of 22 authorities across the country given permission to borrow cash for the project.

It will get £1 million – which must be paid back – as part of a Government drive to build more homes.

Sixty-five properties owned by the local authority will be built in Chadsmoor as part of a wider scheme which will see 141 properties built in total.

And now it has been revealed Rugeley will get 21 homes as part of the project. The council will not reveal the location as talks are still ongoing.

Cannock Council leader George Adamson said: "This is good news. We applied for permission to borrow the money and I'm glad we've got it. We're already building the first new council homes for 25 years and now Rugeley can benefit as well."

The homes in Cannock will replace 170 outdated flats on the Moss Road Estate that will be demolished to make way for the new development.

Housebuilder Keepmoat Homes will build the new Chadsmoor properties and work is due to start later in the year.

Out of the 65 council houses, 30 will have two bedrooms, 27 will have three bedrooms and eight will have four bedrooms.
