Sheila Crozier, who was thought to be in her 70s, died in hospital.

She was taken to hospital after being rescued by firefighters from her burning bungalow in Hendon Close, Bushbury, Wolverhampton.

Mrs Crozier she was initially taken to the city's New Cross Hospital following the blaze at around 10.45 on Thursday night, but was later transferred to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, in Birmingham, where she was treated for severe burns.

Hospital spokeswoman Fiona Glebioskai said Mrs Crozier died on Friday.

Firefighters had carried her through the window of the bungalow.

Neighbour Mary Fletcher, aged 84, paid tribute to Mrs Crozier.

"She was a nice person," she said.

"I didn't know her very well, but often used to see her sitting out on the grass at the side of her bungalow.

"Because she had trouble with her legs, somebody used to come out every day and take her out."

It is believed Mrs Crozier lived alone, and had grown-up children.

Neighbour John Griffin said he became aware of the fire when he heard noise outside.

He said Mrs Crozier was a very quiet woman.

"She kept herself to herself," he said.

"I saw they were carrying her out of the window, you could tell it was serious because they were treating her outside in the ambulance, they were there for a long time."

Matthew Smith of West Midlands Fire Service said the damaged was confined to a bedroom, and the cause of the blaze was believed to be accidental. A burned mattress was left in the garden outside the property after the fire.

Police were called and boarded the bungalow up following the blaze.
