Planned 200 new homes for Staffordshire would damage area, residents claim

Residents have voiced concerns about plans to build more than 200 new homes on land in Staffordshire.

The new development has been earmarked for land on the border of Baswich and Walton On the Hill near Stafford.

However residents in the area have voiced concerns about the proposals which would see 225 new properties built in total alongside a convenience store.

Known as Walton Garden Village the development would be built on a greenfield site between the railway line and the Bluebell Hollow housing development on Milford Road.

A new access to the development would be created from Milford Road.

The plans also include community parklands and were submitted to Staffordshire Borough Council on September 4 by Hallam Land Management limited. A public consultation on the proposed application ended on September 30 and the deadline for objections is October 10.

Nearby residents have raised their concerns against the development saying they fear it could lead to the destruction of natural wildlife habitats in the area.

Other concerns raised include the lack of space in local schools and the additional volume of traffic in the area.

Those leading the campaign against the development have called the estate exit a hazard at peak times because of its proximity to busy roads and Walton High School.

Posters listing reasons to object against the plans have been handed out and letters have been sent to residents homes by neighbours against the plans.

One neighbour who didn't wish to be named said: "These plans will back onto our home. The character of the landscape will be lost and we will lose our views. I don't feel like we have had sufficient time or information about what is happening. We do not have the amenities to cope with a development of this scale, especially with the closure of local hospital services."

Milford ward councillor Francis Finlay is opposed to the proposed build and said: "I am against this development because the land in question is not part of the local housing plan for approved development sites adopted in June."
