The woman, thought to be in her 20s, was on her way to New Cross Hospital when her father pulled the car into Fallings Park fire station, fearing they would not make it in time.

Crew Commander Nathan Highfield said: "Both of them were in quite a state, she was starting to give birth, she was starting to push. It is not something we have ever had to deal with before."

Mr Highfield said a paramedic based at the Bushbury Road station tended to the mum-to-be until an ambulance arrived. Mr Highfield said the woman's husband was already waiting for her at the hospital.

It is believed she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl, at New Cross following the drama at 1pm on Thursday.

Firefighter Ben Cannon added: "I was having my lunch at the time.

"I have never known anything like it before. The father said he didn't think he would make it to the hospital."
