The former striker is regarded by fans as the greatest player ever to put on a Blues shirt.

He became Birmingham City's youngest debutant in 1970 and scored 119 goals in 280 league appearances for the club.

Francis became manager at the Blues in 1996, taking them to the 2001 League Cup final, losing to Liverpool. He left the club later that year.

The star will be officially presented before the club's home game against Nottingham Forest on 29 November on what will be called Trevor Francis Day.

The announcement was made at St Andrews by chairman of the Broad Street Walk of Stars Selection Committee Jasper Carrott said: "You mention Birmingham City's most famous players and Trevor Francis is right up there.

Who else should be added to the city's Walk of Stars?

"The award is for people who have who done a lot for the area and he's certainly done that.

"He is known not just in Birmingham, but nationally and internationally.

"He's the perfect recipient for what has become a very appreciated award."

Francis said he was 'absolutely thrilled' to be receiving the star.

"I've had to keep this quiet for the last week - that's been very difficult. I've just told my family and two of my closest friends. It's a great honour," he said.

"I understand it's going to be a Trevor Francis Day and that the game is against Nottingham Forest. Does that mean I get to organise the result as well?," he joked, adding: "I'm really looking forward to it. Birmingham is a bit part of my life."

The Broad Street Walk of Stars recognises those residents of the city who have made a significant contribution in their respective field and Trevor Francis becomes the latest local sports star to be honoured.
