The northbound section of the A449 Stafford Road between Wobaston Road in Fordhouses and junction two of the M54 will be shut from 7pm on Friday.

It will open at 5am on Monday.

Wolverhampton City Council said the work is being carried out because a downpour of rain meant the original surface had failed.

Wolverhampton city councillor for Bushbury North Daniel Warren said the work is necessary.

He said: "This is something that will be for the safety of drivers and residents in the area.

"The tarmac is becoming worn in places and the work needs to be done. This isn't a project that will go on for months it will take days and we hope from then we have turned a corner and work on the island will finish.

"I urge people to be patient as workers complete the repairs."

Councillor Warren said that safety measures were being installed on the road to combat speeding on the dual carriageway.

He added: "There have been concerns about the speed that motorists have approached the junction. As part of the work speed reduction grids will be installed in effort to slow vehicles down."
