Walsall man shot in head

A man was taken to hospital after being shot in the head with an air weapon in Walsall.

The victim was discovered with a pellet lodged in his face and police swarmed to Palfrey.

The injuries of the man, believed to be aged in his 30s, are not thought to be life-threatening.

West Midlands Police said officers were called after a man was assaulted at the junction of Milton Street and Bescot Street yesterday.

He was found with the injury and a man was arrested in connection with firing the weapon.

A stretch of nearby Milton Street by a row of shops was cordoned off as officers launched an investigation at around 2.30pm today.

Police have said it is being treated as an isolated case between two people who know each other.

Some residents in the area reported of seeing armed police and an overhead helicopter as the road was sealed off for a short period of time.

Juma Aziz, of Caspian Pizza in Milton Street said: "I heard a noise from the shop, then the police came and the road was blocked. I heard someone had been shot.

Resident Abdul Hayy of nearby Countess Street, added: "There were two marked cars and there were armed police. They were here about half an hour."

Another resident, who did not want to be named, added: "I heard there had been a shooting and it has come as a bit of a shock."

Supt Maria Fox, from Walsall police station, said: "Officers arrived at the scene shortly after the assault was reported to us and following an area search, a man was arrested nearby in connection with firing the weapon.

"We would like to reassure residents that this is an isolated matter, which appears to have taken place between two men known to one another.

"I would urge anyone who thinks they may have seen or heard anything which could help us to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
