Alexander Picken pleaded guilty to driving a motor vehicle while over the limit at Walsall Magistrates Court.

The 18-year-old of Brook Lane in Walsall Wood crashed his Vauxhall Corsa into a wall while driving along Pelsall Lane on August 23.

He admitted drinking a pint of lager and a shot of sambuca 15 minutes before getting behind the wheel. A breathalyser test revealed he had 55 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Miss Maxine McIntosh, prosecuting, said: "The defendant was driving along Pelsall Lane after midnight when his vehicle struck a kerb and travelled along the pavement before colliding with a wall, causing damage.

Picken passed his practical driving test on June 16 this year.

Mr Christopher Loach, defending, said he was 'inexperienced' but was 'normally a careful driver.'

He added: "He has never been in any trouble before and has a clean licence.

"He did not believe he was over the limit and foolishly drove which reflects his inexperience. This is a very hard lesson he has had to learn because he has lost his good name and a substantial amount of money through his insurance company.

"He is normally a responsible young man who has never been in this position before."

The court heard Picken's car was left at the scene for a short period and later stolen by thieves.

Picken was disqualified from driving for 15 months and given a fine of £110, a victim surcharge of £20 and court costs of £85.
