The driver, a man in his mid-20's, was extricated from the vehicle with the assistance of the fire service and was treated for serious injuries to both of his legs before being taken to the major trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "On arrival at the scene crews found two cars that had been in collision.

"One of the vehicles had sustained extensive damage to the front leaving its driver trapped by his legs.

"A second man in his 20's was treated at the scene for a knee injury.

"He was immobilised and conveyed, via land ambulance, to New Cross Hospital for further assessment and treatment."
