A stretch of the M54 was shut today after roadworks that were due to finish at 6am were not completed in time.

The carriageway was shut eastbound between Junction 3 for the A41 at Albrighton and Junction 2 for Wolverhampton.

By 2pm the outside lane had been reopened to traffic but work was continuing on the inside lane.

The carriageway was closed overnight for routine maintenance involving worn patches being relaid.

But workers dug out a larger section of road than planned and could not resurface it all in time.

Earlier, spokesman James Wright said drivers were facing an extra 10 to 15 minutes on their journeys.

They were being asked to follow the signed diversions that were in place overnight.

Mr Wright added: "This is clearly not ideal and we are looking to fix the issue as soon as we can.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

The same stretch of the M54 is due to close again tonight from 10pm.
