Budget supermarket Lidl has announced plans for a revamped store in West Bromwich which will create jobs.

The company wants to knock down the existing supermarket in High Street and replace it with a new, modern building.

The proposals, submitted to Sandwell Council, say the new store will employ more than 10 additional workers.

Bosses say they are investing 'several million pounds' in the scheme.

They say by building a new supermarket they will have a more efficient store layout, more space between aisles and checkouts and be able to stock a higher amount of products.

The application lodged by James Hanna of Lidl says: "We anticipate it will bring several million pounds worth of investment into the area, providing a new, attractive and modern redevelopment, offering local employment and choice."

"Lidl intend to employ in excess of an additional 10 full time equivalent members of staff following the redevelopment."

The new store, which would be single-storey, would cover an area measuring around 23,034 sq ft and there would be 90 parking spaces, fewer than the existing 166 but bosses say they feel the number is sufficient according to demand.

It is one of the company's 600 stores across the country.

Neighbouring residents and businesses have until September 29 to have their say on the plans.

Sandwell Council is expected to make a decision on the scheme within the next three months.

It comes just days after Aldi announced plans for a new multi-million pound store in Oldbury.

It will be built on vacant land, near the Ramada Hotel and opposite the existing Asda superstore off Wolverhampton Road.

Bosses say the scheme will transform the disused site which is also a short distance from Oldbury Retail Park.

The firm said up to 40 full-time and part-time positions will be created if the scheme is given the go-ahead.

Letters are being sent to more than 2,500 households and businesses in the surrounding area to get people's views on the scheme.

It has been welcomed by Oldbury ward councillor Susan Downing who said she supported the creation of new jobs in the borough.

The development would also include a 115-space car park, bosses at Aldi said. A consultation event was taking place today to give people the chance to view the proposals.

A planning application will then by submitted to Sandwell Council at a later date once feedback has been reviewed.
