The main rail link between Wolverhampton and London will be disrupted by improvement work over the Christmas break.

The stretch of the West Coast main line through Watford will be closed from Christmas Eve until December 29 while major improvement work is carried out.

The line reopened this week, having closed for three successive weekends while more than 300 track workers and engineers installed new sections of railway and improved the signalling system around the Watford area.

The workers continued through bank holiday Monday to complete the upgrades, which rail chiefs say will leader to a better, more reliable service.

Jim Sydall, acting route managing director for Network Rail, said planning was already underway for the next closure.

He said: "The past three weekends have seen a significant amount of work completed which will help to provide a better and more punctual and reliable railway on the West Coast main line through Watford.

"I would like to thank passengers for their patience while the work was carried out as it meant longer journeys and alternative routes for many. There are still a further four weekends of work to come, starting with the next closure over the Christmas period."

The work is due to be completed by April 2015.
