Thieves broke down the rear door of Toye & Co in Warstone Lane before making off with the haul of decorative fingernails.

They also took silver wire and scrap silver plate worth another £3000 in the theft, which happened in the early hours of June 29.

Police are now appealing for information in connection with the burglary at the family-run company.

Investigating officer DC Rebecca Roebuck said: "The silver nails are quite distinctive in design and we are asking anyone who has been offered them for sale to contact us."

The company, which was founded in 1685, holds a Royal Warrant from the Queen as a supplier of gold and silver laces, insignia and embroidery.

They were also commissioned to manufacture the medal presented to serving personnel in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The expensive nails were stolen from their metalwork manufacturing operation which is situated in the heart of Birmingham's historic Jewellery Quarter.

Anyone with information about the burglary should contact police on 101.
