The guard was left with a minor injury and witnesses describe seeing two men fleeing in a dark coloured car, possibly an estate model, after the raid outside the Co-operative store in Raynor Road in Fallings Park at 9.55am.

Detectives have cordoned off the scene with forensic teams expected on site late today.

Police locked down the surrounding roads but the culprits had already made their getaway.

CCTV from the scene has been recovered and is now being examined.

Detective Sergeant Nick Walton from Wolverhampton CID said: "At this time we do not believe any weapons were used and the guard received a minor injury and has been left shaken by this frightening ordeal."

The two men were dressed in dark clothing and had their faces covered.

A Co-operative spokesman said: "We are working with the police and would appeal for anyone with information to come forward."

Witnesses or anyone with any information are asked to call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 111 555
