Raft on improvements on the way at indoor market

An indoor market is to be improved in a bid to get more shoppers through the door.

Changes will be made at Rugeley Indoor Market, including the addition of artwork to make the entrance more attractive. Local schoolchildren will get involved in the artwork, which bosses hope will make the area more appealing and bright.

Cannock Chase Council launched a public survey in June to seek views on the market.

More than 260 people responded in the town, with 67 per cent saying they shop in the market in Bees Lane and 49 per cent revealing they visit once a week. The survey also showed the most popular items bought at the market were sweets and cakes, followed by meat, pet supplies, technology products and furniture.

People were also asked how they would rate the market on a number of themes, including opening hours, the range of stalls, parking, and the interior and exterior of the market.

Councillor Diane Todd, town centre regeneration boss at the council, said: "The responses show the wide range of goods and services that people buy there and show that local people who use the market do value what it offers and the role it plays in the local community.

"Of course improvements can be made and we're very grateful for the feedback we've received.

"One of the major themes to come out of the survey was that the market needs brightening up so we'll be working with local young people on an exciting art project to do just that.

"We'll also be launching a campaign to really spread the word about Rugeley indoor market and to attract more people through the doors to find out just what's on offer."

The artwork with the theme of shopping will be designed by local schoolchildren.

Council bosses are also hoping to spread the word on the market by launching the Support Your Local Market campaign. They hope the new marketing campaign in the area will encourage more stallholders and shoppers into the market.

Promotional material including banners and postcards has been designed by the council to boost the popularity of the indoor market.

The market is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. It has around 20 stalls.

It emerged last month that Cannock Indoor Market is set to have a major refurbishment to make it more appealing to shoppers.

The district council commissioned a study into how the market, which is based in Marke Hall, can be improved. Councillors have earmarked £10,000 for the review.
