Three men were taken to hospital following the smash in Field Road, Bloxwich.

The taxi driver, a man in his 20s, was trapped in his vehicle for around 45 minutes and had to be cut free by firefighters. He suffered a broken arm.

A passenger in the taxi, another man in his 20s, suffered spine injuries, while a third man was found in the road and had a head injury.

Debbie Tapper has lived in nearby High Street for 10 years and said she was woken up by a 'loud bang.'

She said: "I looked outside and I saw two cars had crashed into each other. The loud bang really scared me, I didn't know what had happened at first because I was in a daze.

"One man was lying face down on the pavement and there was a lot of blood and oil and debris everywhere.

"The taxi driver had to be cut out of his car by firefighters and it was quite scary to see.

"My brother died in a crash 30 years ago and this brought memories back for me which was really upsetting.

"I have never seen an accident as bad as this before but we have had a few crashes over the years so I think something needs to be done to make the area safer."

Another resident who did not want to be named said the road was cordoned off while police worked to clear the scene.

The 22-year-old added: "I was on my way to work early this morning and I saw the road had been cordoned off.

"I had heard a loud bang earlier on but I thought I had been dreaming.

"It looked pretty nasty so I hope everyone involved is okay."

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Chris Kowalik said the three men were taken to hospital after the smash at around 1.30am yesterday (MON).

He added: "The taxi driver was freed from the vehicle and was found to have a broken arm. He was taken on alert to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"A man in his 20s, who was a passenger in the taxi, had managed to get himself out of the vehicle and was experiencing spinal tenderness so he was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital.

"A third man who was in the road, had an injury to his head. He was immobilised and was taken to Walsall Manor Hospital."

Three ambulances were sent to the scene as well as fire crews from nearby Bloxwich Fire Station and West Midlands Police officers.

West Midlands Spokesman Deb Edmonds said the driver of one of the vehicles had been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and is currently being questions by police.
