Man dies after falling ill at wheel and smashing into parked car

A man has died following a smash in Walsall which saw him fall ill at the wheel and crash into a parked car.

Officers were called to the scene in Midland Road in Darlaston at 8.10am this morning.

The driver, thought to be in his 60s, was treated by paramedics at the scene but, despite the best efforts of the ambulance staff, later died.

Officers from the Collision Investigation Unit are eager to speak to the driver of a silver Mercedes SLK which was seen in the vicinity of Midland Road at around the time of the collision.

Sergeant Paul Hughes said: "It is very important that the driver of the silver Mercedes contacts me or one of my team as soon as possible.

"We strongly believe that the driver will be in a position to help us with important information that will help us piece together how the collision happened.

"The family of the man who died have been informed and specialist officers continue to liaise with them at this sad time."

The road between Midland Road and The Crescent in Darlaston was closed until around midday.
