Both vehicles - one a BMW M3 - were clocked doing 112 mph and one of the drivers was arrested on suspicion of being over the drink-drive limit.

Two more were doing 96mph, the driver of one of which was found to be a foreign national with no insurance. His vehicle was seized and he paid a £400 on the spot fine.

Another of the motorists also had his vehicle seized for no insurance and a third did not have an MoT.

The speed enforcement operation took place yesterday and was run by officers from the Central Motorway Police Group on the northbound carriageway of the motorway near Junction 14 at Stafford.

Officers stopped 17 cars in 90 minutes for going too fast.

Similar operations normally have a laser speed detector set up on a bridge or other vantage point with patrol cars waiting further along the motorway to stop the offenders.
