Lee Jezard, 22, was arrested after climbing over an empty check in desk and onto the airfield.

Mr Jezard had missed his flight to Ibiza when he boarded the Lufthansa Embraer 195 plane.

After drinking in the airport bar the hotel manager tried to convince a cleaner on board that he was the co-pilot but was arrested.

Mr Jezard, , from Evesham in Worcester , said:"I know what I did was pretty stupid but I'm surprised I was able to get that close to a plane anyway, if exposing the huge breach of security stops a terrorist attack then it will be worth it."

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "He was charged later with the offence of entering a security restricted area of an aerodrome without the permission of the manager and a separate offence of boarding an aircraft without permission.

"He was released on bail, with conditions not to attend any airport in the UK, and is due to appear before Birmingham Magistrates on August 20."

The drama happened on July 17.
