But Wolves fans can rest easy - the Billy Wright statue outside Molineux is just getting a spring clean.

Work on the statue began yesterday and is continuing today.

The bronze sculpture opened in 1996 but every few years is cleaned by a specialist contractor.

Later this week the statue of Stan Cullis will also be professionally cleaned.

It is expected that it will take a week to finish the work on both statues.

Wolves spokesman Matt Grayson said: "The Billy Wright Statue is one of the most iconic in English football.

"We make sure that we look after it and every couple of years we get a specialist contractor to make sure it is in excellent condition.

"The work takes a day or two to complete and we'll also be working on the Stan Cullis Statue this week.

"It will probably take around a week in total."

The Billy Wright statue depicts the former England captain - who earned 105 caps for his country - leading out his team.

Billy's widow Joy unveiled the long-awaited statue of the Wolves and England legend in September 1996.

Around 500 fans gathered to watched the 9ft sculpture being unveiled, as well as fellow Wolves heroes including Ron Flowers.

He had died two years earlier, aged 70.

The statue of legendary boss Stan Cullis went on display in 2003, with an unveiling ceremony attended by Sir Bobby Charlton.

It shows Cullis in his prime, wearing striped Wolves tie, a blazer and trenchcoat with his famous trilby hat.

It is also 9ft tall and on the plinth is Cullis' most famous saying: "You only get one life and I gave mine to Wolves".

Former chairman Sir Jack Hayward commissioned the statue in the month's before Cullis' death in 2001.
