Luke Ireland was this week jailed for four years and nine months after pointing a BB gun at a woman and her pregnant daughter.

He later arrested after he plunged into a canal while trying to flee police and had to be fished out.

Ireland pounced as Diane Duggan and 19-year-old Kirsty Doughty were walking in the dark to Pelsall Labour Club at 9pm on March 29, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard yesterday.

He took a bag containing £97 cash and a phone and fled when he spotted that his teenage victim was pregnant.

Shortly afterwards police arrived to arrest Ireland at home over an unconnected matter, said Mr James. Ireland fled but his escape bid ended when he plunged into a canal and had to be helped out of the water by police officers. He then admitted the robbery.

The court heard Ireland, a father-of-one, from King George Crescent, Rushall, had taken drugs before committing the offence. He admitted robbery, attempted robbery, possession of an imitation firearm and assault.
