Several roads around Oldbury town centre were cordoned off by police shortly after 8pm after would-be thieves attempted to break into an ATM machine.

West Midlands Police say the suspects drilled a hole into the cash machine in Church Square.

Officers closed-off the area for fear the culprits would try to 'blow open the ATM by igniting gas'.

Oldbury fire crew were also on standby but were not required after police confirmed it was safe to reopen the roads.

Roads around the area were reopened at around 9.30pm. Police say no one was injured and nothing was stolen.
