Probe launched after teenager knocked down by police van

Officers are being investigated after a 17-year-old was knocked off his bike by a police dog van.

The incident happened in West Bromwich last night as officers were investigating reports of two attempted robberies by youths on bicycles.

A police dog van was involved in the search at around 11.50pm when it collided with the teenager on Great Bridge Street, near Charles Street.

The 17-year-old was then taken to hospital with leg injuries.

An investigation has now been launched by West Midlands Police's Professional Standards Department into the collision, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has also been made aware.

DCI Jane Parry, from Sandwell Police, said: "The injured teenager remains stable in hospital and we will be speaking to him in due course.

"Inquiries are underway to trace other youths on pedal bikes who were in the area."

Meanwhile officers are still investigating the two reports of the attempted robberies.

The first report came from a premises in Bagnall Street, West Bromwich, at 11.25pm last night following an attempted robbery of pedal bikes, and a second call reported a 15-year-old boy who was threatened by youths on bikes for his mobile phone.

DCI Parry added: "Inquiries are continuing into the robberies and we appeal for anyone who has information to come forward."
