Controversial Staffordshire camping plans to be discussed at meeting

Outraged residents have called a public meeting to discuss controversial plans to erect a campsite in a South Staffordshire village.

Earlier this week it emerged Bill Watton had applied to the Camping and Caravanning Club in a bid to set up an official camping area at the back of his house on Long Lane, Newtown.

But the move sparked fury amongst villagers who maintain Mr Watton is attempting to bypass planning laws, having previously applied to South Staffordshire District Council to turn the land over to a gipsy caravan park.

Planning bosses at the authority threw out the proposals last year, citing fears over the impact on green belt land and increased traffic problems in the area.

Cllr David Clifft, chairman of Essington Parish Council, said residents were 'deeply concerned' about the latest move.

"This is something we have been dealing with for four years now and it simply won't go away," he said.

"The Camping and Caravanning Club are now aware of the history of the site, but we think it is important that residents get the chance to air their views in a public forum."

The meeting will take place on Monday (July 7) at Wyrley Juniors Football and Community Room, Long Lane, Essington, at 7pm.
