Two lanes of the M6 northbound between junction 10 for Walsall and 10a for the M54 have been closed while emergency services deal with the smash, which happened about 1.30pm.

One person was trapped in one of the cars and was released by the fire service. No-one was believed to be badly injured.

The hard shoulder – which was already open to traffic – and the inside lane were shut. Highways Agency spokeswoman Sam Harris said delays of about 10 minutes were caused.

She added: "It is in a stretch of the motorway where we have four lanes available so it has not caused too many problems."
