Armed robber who escaped from Staffordshire jail arrested

A convicted armed robber from Staffordshire who absconded from prison while serving a life sentence has been arrested in Hampshire.

David Blood escaped from Ford Open Prison in West Sussex on June 12.

It is the second time the 48-year-old from Tamworth has absconded from prison.

In 2012 he escaped from HMP Sudbury in Derbyshire and was captured several months later in Norton Canes, Cannock.

Blood was jailed for life at Stafford Crown Court in 2003 after he was convicted of robbing a post office in Wylde Green, Sutton Coldfield with a number of other men in 2000.

Sussex Police issued a number of appeals for information and officers liaised with a number of forces across the country to try and trace him.

Blood was arrested on Tuesday (24) at around 7pm in Winchester.

Detective Inspector Russ Burgess with Sussex Police said: "Blood was arrested after information was received that he was in Winchester. He has now been charged and is in the custody of Hampshire police."

Blood will appear at Basingstoke Magistrates' Court today (Thursday 26) charged with escaping from lawful custody.
