Double trouble as lightning flashes over the Black Country

Lightning lit up the sky over the Black Country during the balmy weather - as this dramatic photograph shows.

Quick-thinking Daisy Laverock-Willis took out her camera to film the sky over Dudley from her home in Stourbridge when the weather turned yesterday afternoon.

After filming two lightning bolts, she connected her Fuji camera to her computer and caught a screen grab of the footage to leave this dramatic image.

"The bolt only lasted a second and I had 15 minutes of footage so it took a while to get it, but when I did I was really pleased with how it looked," the 20-year-old said.

"It was about 4pm and I was sat in my house when the lightning started, I quickly set up the tripod, pressed record and let mother nature do its thing.

"I think I caught the biggest bolt. It caused a huge flash across the sky and a large bang after it.

"It was surprising because it had been such a nice day, and then 20 minutes after the thunder it returned to being nice again. That's the weather for you."

Miss Laverock-Willis, who lives in Lawnswood Road, took up photography while at Kingswinford School.

She now works as a freelance writer, but still enjoys taking 'hundreds of pictures'.

She had only bought her camera a month ago after her previous one broke.

She said: "I'm sure my teachers would be proud of this shot."

The thunder storms yesterday caused flash flooding in some areas of the borough. In Stourbridge, a subway which runs under the town centre ring road was left underwater due to a public sewer filling up.

People living near the CALA Homes development in Hagley also complained of water coming from the site toward their homes.

Weather experts predict the warm weather is here to stay for the next five days, although rain is expected to feature over the weekend.
