More than 700 visit Wolverhampton flea market

The sights, sounds and scents of a food and flea market came together to celebrate a city's rich tapestry of different cultures.

The market, which featured more than 30 stalls selling food from around the world, handmade jewellery, crafts and clothing was held at the Light House Media Centre in Wolverhampton.

It was organised by Blondies Vintage Events and Birmingham-based The Flying Flea, in a bid to showcase a style of market which is something of a rarity in the city.

With more than 700 people visiting the venue over the course of the day, organiser Ellen Roberts hailed the venture as a huge success.

"People are always leaving Wolverhampton to visit events like this in other cities, so we decided it was about time we put something on here to bring people into our city," said the 39-year-old from Perton.

"Considering how bad the weather was it was fantastic to get so many people through the doors.

"We wanted to create a mini-festival vibe to highlight and embrace Wolverhampton's multi-cultural heritage and I think we succeeded."

The event also featured children's entertainment and face painting, along with buskers, including a nod to the skiffle era when The Flying Flea's Pete Hammond broke out the washboard.

There was also a large screen showing of the classic 1955 film Rebel Without A Cause.

In July the Light House will be hosting Ellen's next big venture, a 1960s Italian mod-themed market to tie in with the venue's Italian film weekend.

The event will take place on July 20 from 11am to 7pm, and will feature food stalls and music from the MODA period.
