Taxi man hurt in Black Country road attack

A 62-year-old man tried to drag a taxi driver from his vehicle because he was blocking the road, punching and injuring him in the attack.

The taxi driver had been carrying a disabled passenger and her carer when Peter Ireson struck on September 21, 2013.

The Centre Cars driver had stopped outside the post office on Dudley Road in Blakenhall when Ireson pulled up in a car near to him and got out.

Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court heard yesterday how Ireson said to the taxi driver: "What are you doing? You're blocking the road," before launching his attack.

Mrs Maxine Jarrouse-Jones, prosecuting, said: "The defendant has then approached the injured party's taxi, tried to pull him from it, injuring him by throwing punches."

She added that the taxi driver was left with a sore wrist but his injuries were not serious. Ms Amanpreet Bhachu, defending, said her client had been injured himself.

She said: "He actually had reddening to his face and he had a breaking or a bruising of the skin on the wrist, so he actually suffered significant injuries himself."

Ireson, of Tettenhall Road, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton, previously denied a charge of assault by beating, but was convicted at a trial. Yesterday's hearing was told that he was given a community order for an assault offence in 2010.

Magistrates gave him a conditional discharge for two years at court yesterday.

They also ordered him to pay £250 in compensation to the victim, plus £250 costs and a £15 surcharge.
