Protest at plan for jet washer

Plans to use a pressure washer to clean vehicles at a garage in Stafford have caused anger among residents – but are set to be approved by council bosses.

The business on the Walton Industrial Estate, Beacon Road, Walton, wants to use the washer from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday. But locals are worried about problems with noise throughout the day.

Planning permission was recently granted for the garage – but now the applicants want the conditions changed to allow them to use a pressure washer.

They say a three-metre high fence with wooden boards will be built around the washing area to cut down noise.

But residents have objected to the proposals and are set to speak out at a meeting being held next Wednesday.

Stone councillor Jill Hood, who called in the plans for the committee to make a decision, said she wanted members to 'consider the proposal and note the strong objections of those residents who live only a short distance from the unit'.

She added: "This is the only unit on the industrial estate with an entrance/exit onto a residential area. The potential impact of the proposal on the amenity of nearby residents particularly in relation to noise and disruption will be considerable."

A report to councillors says: "

The current proposal, as amended, will acceptably minimising noise and disturbance to neighbouring residents, and would not have adverse impacts on highway safety interests. Accordingly, the proposal is considered acceptable."
