Tory councillors John Woodall, Jill Nicholls, Elizabeth Walker, Colin Wilson and Independent Conservative Ray Burston told a full meeting of Dudley Council they would not be standing in the elections on May 22.

All have served on the authority for a number of years – with some holding key cabinet positions in the past. Amblecote councillor Elizabeth Walker addressed the chamber first to announce she was standing down from her role, which includes her position on the Children's Services Scrutiny Committee.

"To all my friends on the opposite side and to all my friends on this side and all those in the middle, I would like to say a big thank for your courtesy over the years," she said.

Hayley Green and Cradley councillor, Ray Burston is standing down after more than 20 years. He has served on the authority for two stints and was the borough's Mayor 2008/2009.

Councillor John Woodall, another former mayor, is stepping down following a long period of illness. He was first elected to the council in 1987 representing the Belle Vale and Hasbury ward which he held until 1995.

He was re-elected in 1998 in the Halesowen South seat which has held ever since.

Councillor Nichols has served the Belle Vale ward since 2003 and Councillor Wilson was first elected in 2004 and has served the Pedmore and Stourbridge East since then.

Council leader Councillor David Sparks wished them all well and thanked them for their service.
