Now Muneer Ahmed, who is serving a prison term for beating another dog to death with a brick, has been handed a second jail sentence. Sandwell Magistrates' Court was yesterday told how Ahmed's Staffordshire Bull Terrier-type dogs, a male called Tigger and a female called Tia, were wandering Richmond Road, Bearwood at around 3.30pm on January 20.

Miss Maxine McIntosh, prosecuting, said: "A witness heard some noises in the alleyway near her house, and when she looked out over the fence she described seeing two dogs barking ferociously. She expressed some concern at seeing those dogs. She was very scared, they were barking very loudly." Miss MicIntosh said police and the fire service were called and a section of the road cordoned off, while dog handlers conducted a search. She added: "During the course they said the larger of the two dogs, Tigger, ran towards Pc Chester and attempted to attack.

"Police struck Tigger using a pole.

"Tigger was later destroyed. Officers seized the second dog, Tia." She said that in police interview Ahmed, 33 and from Priory Close, Smethwick, admitted owning the two dogs, and that they had been living in the garden of the family home he shared with his wife. He told police he had left the dogs alone in the rear garden and went out on the day of the incident.

Tia was ordered to be taken away from Ahmed and he was given a 20-week prison sentence, having already pleaded guilty to being the owner of a dog dangerously out of control. That jail term will run concurrently to a 22-week sentence he is already serving for beating another dog to death with a brick, for which he was imprisoned on February 20.

In both hearings he was also banned from owning, keeping, transporting or looking after dogs for life.
