Endangered lion Mwamba dies at Dudley Zoo

A highly endangered lion which was part of a conservation breeding project at Dudley Zoo has died.

Asiatic lion Mwamba, aged 11, died despite veterinary efforts to save him.

The lion was thought to have been one of about 260 of the subspecies known as Panthera leo persicus, which is native in India.

He was brought in from Paignton last year to breed with the zoo's female pair Asha and Kyra.

On Twitter, the zoo said it was 'with immense sadness' they were announcing his death, which happened on Friday

Staff are now waiting on the results of a post mortem.
