Worries over measures for Walsall road safety

Concerns have been raised about road safety measures which were installed along a busy route in Walsall, amid fears they are causing a nuisance.

Residents and Walsall South MP Valerie Vaz have met with council officers to express their views on the steps which have been introduced along Walstead Road.

More than £100,000 was allocated for safety measures to slow down traffic along the busy route which runs between Yew Tree and Delves.

There were speed humps put in place in 2012 after records showed there had been 18 accidents within two years.

But Ms Vaz said there had been problems from the installation of the speed hump, prompting her to organise a meet-up with council officers.

She said: "??I was delighted that so many residents turned out to explain to representatives of Walsall Council the problems which have been caused by the installation of speed humps.

"??Residents told the council officers how the use of concrete traffic islands in the road have made it extremely difficult to exit their driveways.

"Other residents explained that large vehicles passing over the speed humps are creating loud noise and vibrations.

"??The council officers agreed to go and look at what solutions can be put forward in order to address the concerns raised by residents. I hope that this will lead to a satisfactory solution being agreed in the near future."

Money for improvements along Walstead Road was part of the local safety scheme for 2012-13.

There were problems along the route last year when travellers settled on land in Walstead Road.

The brazen group then set up another camp - just yards from where a court order was being sought to move them on.

The council had been seeking an injunction to force the travellers' removal at the town'??s magistrates court in August. But before the hearing they moved to fields across the road belonging to Handsworth Rugby Club.

Road improvements have recently been carried out along the nearby Broadway, which is the main stretch from junction nine of the M6 to Walsall town centre.

Around £75,000 was spent on revamping the road between Broadway and Birmingham Road island.

It has included a new traffic island, an extra lane and wider pedestrian crossings in a bid to cut accidents.

The route is used by thousands of motorists a day and the six week project was carried out over January and February following consultation.
