Jagger Singh was set upon in a suspected racially aggravated assault which saw him knocked to the ground and punched and kicked. The 60-year-old was taken to hospital with his injuries following the attack in Gipsy Lane, Willenhall, at the weekend.

The father-of-two will have to go back to Walsall Manor for further tests once the severe swelling has gone down.

Two men came to the aid of Mr Singh as his attacker fled the scene.

Police are now investigating the assault at just before 10.30am on Sunday.

It comes just a month after the victim underwent a gall bladder operation. It is alleged Mr Singh was racially abused while he being hurt.

His son Kashmere, aged 27, said: "He is a nice down to earth guy, I can't understand why anyone would want to do anything like this.

"He was just walking back to his van. He got punched several times to the head and to the face.

"He was kicked and punched. He said it felt like it was going on for a while.

"He is still in pain and it has affected him mentally as well. It has shocked us all. The family are very angry and upset. He is just waiting for all the swelling to go down and then he will have x-rays and scans."

It is believed the attacker made off in a black car following the incident.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to call them on 101.
