Daring swimmers take the plunge in Midlands pool

It was bitterly cold but that did not stop a group of hardy souls from taking a Christmas Day plunge.

It has become a festive tradition for dozens of people to jump into the waters of a pool in the Midlands.

With some in fancy dress or down to the bare essentials dozens of swimmers were at it again yesterday for the sobering experience.

They were cheered on by well-wishers who gathered at the Blackroot Pool in Sutton Coldfield.

The Christmas Day custom was initially started by a winter swimming club in the 1800s, and has since become a popular part of the yearly calender. Through word of mouth it has now become a tradition for many, some having been doing it for decades. Age was no barrier as both young and old took part.

Many donned Santa's hats as they jumped into the chilly waters.

But the cold weather did not put them off as they managed to escape the strong winds and showers which have battered the Midlands earlier in the week.

The pool is one of the most well known and historic water locations in the area.

Blackroot Pool was built in the 18th century with the primary aim of powering a watermill.

The pool is approximately 12 acres in size.
