An Italian restaurant based in a landmark Wolverhampton city centre spot has been forced to close – with falling trade blamed.

The Ferrante family have run Italian eateries from the same base in Darlington Street for more than 20 years, with Rosso E Nero their most recent venture.

They say they have been forced to close the venue, which is best known as Don Salvo, making 18 members of staff redundant.

In May, the company invested in a £30,000 refurbishment as part of a re-launch that included installing a new bar, raising the floor and fitting a new kitchen.

Director Salvo Ferrante said there had been other changes planned, but after a year of unsustainable losses he reluctantly decided to close the business.

The site has been snapped up by new bosses, who hope to re-open an independent Italian called Amichi within 10 days.
